Medieval Archaeology"The concept 'archaeology' is generally used today to refer to excavations and ground surveys. Indeed all branches of research that concern excavations are 'archaeologies'." (Kockel) Although archaeology deals primarily with material rather than with written remains, objects discovered during excavations must be studied by reference to both sorts of primary sources, which must also be related to each other. On the other hand, archaeological discoveries can complete and even correct the results of historical research conducted exclusively on the basis of written sources. Although there are many reasons for encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration between the different branches of historical scholarship, there are very few medieval archaeologists in Germany. For the most recent of the archaeological subdisciplines (medieval archaeology), there are programs of study in Bamberg and Tübingen. ![]() Video: Medieval Archaeology |
